The INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP Institute

The Instructional Leadership Institute is for Principals, Administrators, Facilitators, Supervisors, Directors of Curriculum, Teacher Leaders, In-school Facilitators, District Cadre members and classroom teachers who aspire towards instructional leadership roles.

The institute, primarily designed for principals, is built on the premise that principals do appreciate practical training in strategies for observing and interpreting effective literacy practices in classrooms. They actively seek to refine their own knowledge and skills in instructional methodology in order to act as objective observers and critical friends providing constructive feedback for teachers, families and students in classrooms.

The Instructional Leadership institute content and training procedures are founded in current research on effective schools, effective professional development and best instructional practices. The content and approaches are not biased towards, or against any specific reading program or textbook adoption, but support more explicit and appropriate decision-making for differentiated instruction within programs based on student needs.

The institute includes input, modelling, practice, reflection and dialogue in the following elements of instructional leadership with a school-wide focus:

  • Developing a school-wide appraisal system with a focus on principals and staff maintaining forward momentum and setting targets for their own on-going professional development.

  • Philosophy and principles of effective schools

  • Research and theory underpinning effective instructional leadership

  • Building team-ship, peer coaching, and expectations for collective responsibility

  • Facilitating collaborative curriculum planning - long, medium and short term

  • Integrating oral, written and visual language across the curriculum

  • The reading and writing processes

  • Building consistent systems for teaching reading, writing and spelling

  •    Key teaching approaches – shared, guided, independent reading and writing

  • Strategies for enhancing comprehension, accuracy and fluency

  • Classroom management and organization

  • Assessment procedures – observing, recording, summarizing, using data
